Practical Solutions

Sand/Glass Filters

Very high pressure on the pressure gauge Filter media (sand or glass) saturated; deep blockage

Perform a complete backwash;
Rinse for 30–60 seconds after backwash;
If necessary, replace sand (every 4–5 years) or glass (every 8–10 years).

Water returns cloudy to the pool Saturated sand/glass, selector valve leaking, or backwash without proper rinsing Replace the filter media if it is at the end of its service life;
Lubricate seals and seat the selector valve;
Make sure to rinse after every backwash.
Leakage through the selector valve Damaged internal gasket or incorrect assembly Replace the gasket or readjust the valve according to the manufacturer's manual; check tightness without forcing plastic parts.
Filter does not retain dirt Insufficient amount of sand/glass or inappropriate granularity Refill with the correct amount of sand (0.4–0.8 mm) or filter glass; ensure even distribution when assembling the filter.
Sand/glass comes out through the return nozzles Damaged internal strainers (screens or laterals) Open the tank, replace strainers or laterals according to the manual; use original parts for maintenance.

Cartridge Filters

Flow reduction (poor circulation) Cartridge saturated or clogged with debris Remove the cartridge, wash with a high-pressure hose;
If deformed or torn, replace immediately.
Torn or deformed cartridge Excessive pressure in the system or use beyond the lifespan (1–2 years) Replace the cartridge with a compatible model;
Adjust backwashing or flow to relieve pressure on the cartridge.
Water does not clear despite circulation Clogged cartridge or chemical imbalance in the water Wash or replace the cartridge; check pH and chlorine levels, adjust chemical treatment before filtering.
Accumulation of algae or debris in the cartridge Infrequent cartridge washing

Establish a weekly cartridge cleaning routine;
Use specific solutions for removing oils and algae when necessary.

Sand or glass filters are suitable for most pools due to their durability and simple backwashing routine.

Cartridge filters are suitable for small spaces or for those who prefer not to have backwashing, but require annual replacement of the filter element.

Check the pressure (pressure gauge or flow) and wash/replace the filter media according to the recommended intervals. Maintain appropriate pH and chlorine levels to avoid overloading the filter and extend its lifespan.

 Maintenance and Usage Tips

Keeping the filter in perfect condition involves three main points:

 Pressure monitoring | Cleaning/replacement routine | Water quality control

 Weekly pressure check:
  • In sand or glass filters, watch the pressure gauge. If the pressure rises about 0.4 bar above the normal level (established right after backwash), it indicates the filter media is saturated. Schedule backwash immediately, followed by a short rinse (30–60 seconds).
  • In cartridge filters, check if the water return flow decreases significantly. If you notice a sharp drop, remove the cartridge and wash it with a high-pressure hose or consider replacing it if damaged.

 Scheduled cleaning and replacement:
  • Sand / glass: Perform a full backwash (flow reversal) until the water runs clear, then rinse to resettle the filter media. Generally, every 4–5 years (sand) or 8–10 years (glass), it is recommended to replace all the filter media.
  • Cartridge: Wash the element weekly and replace it completely every 1–2 years, depending on usage and residue buildup.

 Water quality:
  • Before filtering, maintain pH between 7.2 and 7.6 and chlorine within the recommended range (1.0–3.0 ppm). Water outside these ranges hinders the mechanical action of the filter and promotes algae growth.
  • If persistent turbidity occurs even with a clean filter, review the chemical treatment (flocculant, algaecide, or chlorine shock).

 Protection and visual inspection:
  • Keep the area around the filter ventilated, free of debris or objects that block ventilation.
  • Check sealants monthly, open the pre-filter cover (on the pump) to clean larger debris and ensure there are no leaks.
  • In the sand/glass filter, check the selector valve (make sure it does not leak and moves smoothly without forcing).

 Correct use:
  • Do not operate the pump with the selector valve in "Close" (Closed).
  • Never initiate backwash with the pump off.
  • After maintenance (media or cartridge replacement), reconfigure the selector valve to "Filter" before turning the pump back on.
