Skimmer (Surface Collector)
The skimmer is installed on the pool wall, at the water surface level. It "sucks" the top layer of water, where leaves, oils, dust, insects, and other floating debris usually accumulate.
How it works
- Water enters through the front opening, passing through a floating gate that prevents the return of debris.
- Inside the skimmer, there is a basket that retains solids.
- The water then passes through the piping to the pump and filter.
Problem |
Cause |
Solution |
---|---|---|
Low water flow | Skimmer basket clogged | Clean the basket regularly |
Water does not reach the skimmer | Water level too low | Refill pool water up to the middle of the skimmer |
Bad smell | Accumulation of decomposing leaves | Remove debris and wash the basket frequently |
Suction noises | Air intake due to lack of water or poor sealing | Check the water level and the lid seal |
Main Drain
Installed at the deepest point of the pool, the main drain sucks the water that accumulates at the bottom, removing heavy dirt that sinks, and allows better circulation and renewal of the water throughout the depth.
How it works
-
Works together with the skimmer (usually with compensation valves).
-
In heated pools, it helps to better distribute the temperature.
Safety precautions
-
Modern drains should be anti-entrapment (grated or with dome covers) to prevent accidents.
-
They must comply with standards such as ASME A112.19.8 or equivalents.
Problem | Cause | Solution |
---|---|---|
Weak Suction | Obstruction in piping or grate | Check for blockages and perform maintenance |
Risk of Strong Suction | Poorly balanced system or with the main drain valve fully open | Adjust the valve to split flow with the skimmer |
Quick Maintenance Tip
Check the skimmer basket at least twice a week. A clogged basket reduces pump performance, strains the system, and can cause noise or even damage. Ideally, combine this cleaning with a visual inspection of the drain grate.
